The Leicester Chinese Martial Arts centre is non-profit making martial arts centre promoting Southern Shaolin Kung Fu. We teach a traditional martial art that is intended for practical street and self defence. We have no joining fee and classes are 3 pounds a lesson. Please see below for venues and training times. Classes are open to teenagers and adults. There are 2 clubs in Leicester. We go under the banner of Sam Snui Po after the School of Chinese Boxing in Hong Kong that our system comes from. No previous experience of martial arts is required.

Kung Fu History
Kung Fu was started in the Shaolin temple in China some 2000 years ago to strengthen the monks to prepare them for meditation. It was later used to defend the temple and spread throughout China in the form of fighting styles based on animal movements. In our system we incorporate the movements of all the 5 animals techniques of the Shaolin Temple, i.e. the Dragon, the Tiger, the Crane, the Snake and the Leopard.

Forms
These are pre-set movements practised to perfect specific techniques against specific attacks. In our fighting system we have 3 of these each incorporating techniques from different animals.

Punches, Kicks and Blocks, Grabs and Strikes
In our system you will learn to punch using the whole body's power to block an attack effectively, to kick with both speed and power and you will learn other strikes such as elbow strikes, S knuckles and chops. You will also learn how to grab in order to prevent an opponent from striking you. All of our techniques are practical.

20 Techniques
Traditional forms are not practised against opponents but we have 20 techniques that we practice as partner exercises which teach us specific defence against specific attacks.

20 Kick Techniques
As skill in kicking develops we also learn 20 kick techniques to defend against specific attacks so that kicks are not just for showing off but the practical benefit can be seen.

Takedowns
We have specific takedown techniques intended to throw an opponent to the ground to prevent him from retaliating. These too are very practical for self-defence.

Tai Chi
We also practice Yang Style Tai Chi and Chi Gong to develop the flow of Chi (vital energy) used to make Kung Fu strong internally. The Tai Chi also develops softness to balance out the hardness of Kung Fu. This is important in ying yang theory of equal balance.
